The HPV vaccine is given as an injection into your arm. The number of doses you need depends on your age and how well your immune system works:
- people under 25 usually only need 1 dose
- people aged 25 to 45 usually need 2 doses (given between 6 months and 2 years apart)
- people with a weakened immune system need 3 doses (ideally given within a 12 month period)
Symptoms
- Most HPV infections don't cause symptoms.
- Some HPV infections cause genital warts, which can be itchy or burn.
- Other HPV infections can cause abnormal cells to develop, which can lead to cancer.
Treatment
- HPV usually goes away on its own within a couple of years.
- Vaccines can prevent HPV-related health problems.
- Regular screenings and testing can help detect HPV early.
Prevention
- Get vaccinated against HPV, especially before becoming sexually active.
- Practice safer sex, including using condoms and dental dams.
- Get screened and tested regularly.
- Let your sexual partners know if you have HPV so they can get tested too.
